Why Every Site Shows A Different Number

Search for the bitcoin all-time high and you will see several numbers. They can all be right, because bitcoin has no closing bell. It trades every hour of every day, so each source decides where a day ends.

What the source quotesFigureDate
Highest price ever traded on Coinbase126,296.006 Oct 2025
Highest daily close, days ending midnight UTC124,720.096 Oct 2025
The same close, dated by the FRED series124,720.095 Oct 2025

The last row is the one that trips people up. FRED’s Coinbase bitcoin series takes its daily price at 5 PM Pacific time and files the 124,720.09 record under 5 October. Coinbase’s UTC data puts the same price at the end of 6 October. Same number, different date.

Exchanges add a third layer. Every exchange prints its own highs, so a peak on another exchange can sit a little above or below the Coinbase figure. When you compare sources, check which exchange and which cut-off time they use.

Bitcoin also trades at weekends, when forex and index markets are shut. Check your firm’s weekend holding rule and the time its daily loss limit resets, because bitcoin can move against an open position while you are not watching. We compare drawdown models in trailing vs static drawdown, and you can test a position with the drawdown calculator.
