Why the close and the intraday high are different numbers

The close is where the Dow settles at 4 pm New York time. The intraday high is the highest level it printed at any point in the session. Index providers publish closes, so FRED is our source for 54,349.12. Intraday highs come from market data feeds, so we take 54,744.33 from Yahoo Finance, after checking that its closing figures match FRED to the cent.

Why Older Pages Still Say 53,055.91

In July the Dow set its records on two different days. It closed at 53,055.91 on 6 July, then traded up to 53,289.30 on 7 July before closing lower. For four weeks those were the right answers, and plenty of pages still quote them.

Both were beaten in the first week of August. The Dow closed at a record 53,178.41 on 3 August, 54,085.88 on 4 August and 54,349.12 on 5 August. If a source gives you 53,055.91 or 53,289.30 as the current record, check the date on it.

What The Record Means If You Trade YM, MYM Or US30

A drawdown rule does not track the index. It tracks your account. But some futures firms use an intraday trailing drawdown, which follows your peak unrealised equity as price moves. Others trail only at the end of the day, or use a static floor. Which model your firm uses decides whether an intraday high like 54,744.33 can cost you.

The E-mini Dow future (YM) is 5 US dollars per index point. The Micro E-mini (MYM) is 0.50 US dollars. Take a trader who was long one YM contract through the 5 August session:

5 AUGUST 2026 · ONE LONG YM CONTRACT
Session intraday high    54,744.33  peak unrealised equity marked here
Session close             54,349.12  what the daily chart shows

Points given back       395.21
Dollar swing on YM      $1,976.05  395.21 × $5
Dollar swing on MYM     $197.61  395.21 × $0.50

DISTANCE FROM THE RECORD · 23 SEPTEMBER 2026
Gap                 2,837.53 points  5.22%
  on 1 YM           $14,187.65  2,837.53 × $5
  on 1 MYM         $1,418.77  2,837.53 × $0.50

Under an intraday trailing drawdown, the floor follows the 54,744.33 peak, so it ends the day 1,976.05 dollars higher than the close alone would have put it. Under an end-of-day or static drawdown, the intraday peak never counted. Same trade, different outcome. We compare the models in trailing vs static drawdown, and you can run your own numbers with the drawdown calculator.

Big single days matter too. The 907.47-point gain on 4 August was 4,537.35 dollars on one YM contract, and the 631.21-point drop on 16 September was 3,156.05 dollars. Size to the point value, not the percentage.

All closes and records come from FRED. The Dow is price weighted, so a high-priced stock moves it more than a larger company with a lower share price. Our S&P 500 all-time high and Nasdaq all-time high pages cover those indices in detail. For crypto, see the bitcoin all-time high page.

FAQ

What is the highest the Dow Jones has ever been?

The highest level the Dow has ever traded at is 54,744.33, during the session on 5 August 2026. Its highest close is 54,349.12, set the same day. Neither record has been beaten since.

What is the highest Dow close ever?

54,349.12, on 5 August 2026. It beat the record close of 54,085.88 set the day before. The Dow has not closed above it since.

Is the Dow at an all-time high right now?

Why does every site give a different Dow record number?

Two reasons. The record close (54,349.12) and the record intraday high (54,744.33) are 395.21 points apart, and sites do not always say which one they mean. Pages that have not been updated since July still show that month’s records, 53,055.91 at the close and 53,289.30 intraday.

Has the Dow closed above 54,000?

Not on 23 September 2026. The Dow closed 5.22% below its record, the S&P 500 1.19% below and the Nasdaq Composite 1.13% below. The Nasdaq was the most recent to set a record, on 22 September.

Which Dow record does a prop firm drawdown rule care about?

Neither directly. A drawdown rule tracks your account, not the index. But an intraday trailing drawdown follows your peak unrealised equity, so intraday highs like 5 August’s 54,744.33 are the ones that can raise your floor before price falls back.

How much is one Dow point worth?

5 US dollars on the E-mini Dow future (YM) and 0.50 US dollars on the Micro E-mini (MYM). On a US30 CFD it depends on the contract size your broker or prop firm sets.
