What is a CFD prop firm?
A CFD prop firm funds your trading account after you pass a paid evaluation. You trade forex, indices, gold and crypto CFDs with the firm’s simulated capital, hit a profit target without breaking the loss limits, and keep 70% to 95% of the profit once funded. Your own money is only ever at risk through the entry fee. This is the largest prop firm category: we track 111 CFD firms, scored and re-audited on a rolling cycle.

How the evaluation works
| 1. Buy a challenge | One-time fee in most cases, from under $50 to over $1,000 by account size. Many firms refund it with your first payout |
| 2. Hit the profit target | Typically 8% to 10% in Phase 1 and 5% in Phase 2 on two-step models. One-step and instant models trade a higher fee or tighter drawdown for fewer phases |
| 3. Stay inside the loss limits | A daily loss limit, usually 3% to 5%, and a maximum drawdown, usually 6% to 12%. Whether the drawdown is static or trailing matters more than the number |
| 4. Get funded | You trade the firm’s capital on a simulated feed. Payouts run on cycles from weekly to monthly, most commonly every 14 days |

What to check before you pay
| Static or trailing drawdown? | Static measures from your starting balance. Trailing follows your peak and catches traders who are still net positive |

What is a CFD prop firm?
A CFD prop firm gives you a funded trading account after you pass a paid evaluation. You trade forex, indices, metals and crypto CFDs on the firm’s simulated capital rather than your own money. Pass the profit target without breaching the daily loss limit or maximum drawdown and the firm funds you, then pays you a share of the profit, typically 70% to 95%.
How much does a prop firm challenge cost?
Entry fees run from under $50 for the smallest accounts to over $1,000 for $200K challenges. Most $100K two-step challenges price between $400 and $600. Many two-step firms refund the fee with your first payout, so the effective cost for a profitable trader can be zero. Instant funding models charge more and almost never refund.
Are prop firms legit?
The good ones pay reliably and have years of documented payout history; the worst have collapsed owing traders money. Between 80 and 100 prop firms shut down in the 2024 industry reshuffle alone. Before paying, check for a named legal entity, published rules, an independent payout record, and whether the firm’s advertised Trustpilot rating matches its live profile. What is the difference between a one-step, two-step and instant challenge?
A two-step challenge has two evaluation phases, usually 8-10% then 5% targets, and is the cheapest per dollar of funding. A one-step challenge has a single phase with a higher fee or tighter drawdown. Instant funding skips the evaluation entirely but costs several times more, pays a lower split at first, and the fee is not refundable.
What is a trailing drawdown?
A trailing drawdown follows your account’s peak upward and never resets. On a $100,000 account with a 10% trailing rule, if equity grows to $110,000 the breach level locks at $99,000, so a retrace can close an account that is still in profit from its starting balance. A static drawdown measures from the starting balance only. The drawdown type matters more than the percentage.
Which prop firm has the best profit split?
Published splits in this category run from 70% to 95%, with 80% the most common standard and several firms scaling to 90% or more after consecutive profitable cycles. A high split is worthless without payout reliability, so weigh the split against documented payout history rather than reading it alone.
