What is a futures prop firm?

A futures prop firm funds you to trade CME futures after you pass an evaluation, usually billed as a monthly subscription. You trade E-mini and micro contracts — ES, NQ, CL, GC and the rest — on the firm’s simulated capital, hit a profit target without breaching the drawdown, and keep 80% to 100% of the profit once funded. We track 43 futures firms, from Topstep to the newest instant-funding crop.

Drawdown rules decide most futures accounts. If you trade the opening range, read how the ORB strategy interacts with prop firm drawdown rules before you pick a firm.

How the evaluation works

1. Subscribe to an evaluationMost futures firms bill monthly, from roughly $60 to $350 by account size, until you pass. Some add a one-time activation fee when the funded account starts
2. Hit the profit targetTypically 5% to 9% of the account in a single phase. Minimum trading days vary from none to 7
3. Respect the trailing drawdownNearly every futures firm uses a trailing maximum loss. Whether it trails intraday or end-of-day is the single most important rule in this category
4. Get funded, mind the gatesPayouts usually require qualifying winning days and carry per-request caps in the early cycles. Consistency rules capping your best day are common
5. Scale to liveSeveral firms move consistent traders from simulated funding to live capital at a real broker

Intraday vs end-of-day trailing drawdown

An intraday trailing drawdown follows your open equity tick by tick, so an unrealized spike that retraces can end the account even though you never closed a losing trade. An end-of-day trailing drawdown moves only at the session close, which forgives intraday swings. Two firms with the same headline percentage can be entirely different products because of this one mechanic, and several firms’ marketing does not state which model applies. Check the rulebook, not the pricing page.

What to check before you subscribe

Drawdown modeIntraday trailing, end-of-day trailing, or static. EOD and static are materially kinder
Does the drawdown lock? The better firms stop the trail once it reaches your starting balance
Activation feeSome firms charge $100 to $150 when the funded account starts. Others charge nothing
Payout caps and qualifying daysEarly payouts are usually capped and gated behind minimum winning days. Read the first-cycle terms, not the headline split
Consistency ruleA best-day cap of 30% to 50% is common and delays payouts more than any other rule
Platform and data feesTradovate, NinjaTrader, Rithmic and TradingView dominate. Check what market data is included

Scoring methodology is on the methodology page. Firms that stopped operating, including Rev One Trading in August 2026, are documented on the shutdown tracker.

Futures prop firm FAQ

What is a futures prop firm?
A futures prop firm funds traders on CME futures contracts after a paid evaluation. You trade E-mini and micro contracts on the firm’s simulated capital, pass a profit target without breaching a trailing drawdown, and keep 80% to 100% of profits once funded. Most futures firms bill the evaluation as a monthly subscription rather than a one-time fee.
How much does a futures prop firm evaluation cost?
Monthly subscriptions run from roughly $60 to $350 depending on account size, and the subscription recurs until you pass. Some firms add a one-time activation fee of $100 to $150 when the funded account starts, while others, including FTMO Futures, charge none. A trader who takes four months to pass pays four months of fees, so the realistic cost is the monthly price times your expected time to pass.
What is the difference between intraday and end-of-day trailing drawdown?
An intraday trailing drawdown follows your open equity in real time, so an unrealized profit spike that retraces can breach the account even without a closed losing trade. An end-of-day trailing drawdown only updates at the session close, forgiving intraday swings. This single mechanic changes the difficulty of an evaluation more than the drawdown percentage does.
Do futures prop firms allow overnight holding?
It varies firm by firm and is worth checking before you pay. Many futures firms require positions to be flat before the daily close, and some, including FTMO Futures, forbid overnight and weekend holding entirely with forced liquidation at 4:10pm ET. Firms that do allow overnight holds usually reduce the permitted contract size for held positions.
What happens if a futures prop firm shuts down?
Traders typically lose active subscriptions and unpaid balances. Rev One Trading closed in August 2026 with a live subscriber base and made no statement about outstanding payouts, and between 80 and 100 prop firms across categories closed in the 2024 reshuffle. Prefer firms with a named legal entity and a multi-year payout record, and treat very new firms as a test with the smallest account size.
Which futures prop firms actually pay out?
The established names in this category have multi-year payout histories: Topstep has operated since 2012 and several others publish payout counts. Newer entrants often have no independent payout record at all, which is reflected in our payout reliability scores. Check each firm’s review for what evidence exists rather than relying on the firm’s own totals.
